Steve Prime is a lifelong boating enthusiast whose passion began with his family’s first boat, a Boston Whaler. Over the years, Steve has sailed a diverse range of boats, from 13-footers to 82-foot yachts. His career started in sailmaking, working at two small lofts before joining North Sails East, where he spent nine years. Steve then transitioned to boat manufacturing, taking roles at AMF Alcort and Pearson Yachts, where he served as National Sales Manager over a six-year span. He later managed the Newport Yachting Center, a marina and event venue hosting major events like the Newport International Boat Show.
In 1994, Steve moved to marine insurance, joining Gowrie Barden & Brett and building a 24-year career specializing in recreational marine insurance. Throughout his career, he maintained an active interest in competitive sailing, participating in eight Bermuda Races, two Fastnet Races, and other major offshore events,, including those in the Great Lakes, Maine, the Gulf Coast, and the Caribbean. He has also completed yacht deliveries along the East Coast, navigating both the Intracoastal Waterway and offshore routes from Florida to Newport.
An active member of the boating community, Steve has been involved with numerous organizations, including the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Storm Trysail Club, Cruising Club of America, Sail Newport, US Sailing, and the US Power Squadron. He has taken the Newport to Bermuda Safety Course and studied US Power Squadron programs to deepen his maritime knowledge. His experience includes handling various emergencies, including dismastings.
Today, Steve continues to enjoy sailing, either with friends or on his own Surfhunter 33. In 2021, he took an adventurous trip with his Surfhunter to the Rideau Lakes, traveling via the Hudson River, Erie Barge Canal, and across Lake Ontario.
